Retail / customer service
Adapt the store name, role and your results.
Dear Ms Walsh, I’m writing to apply for the Sales Assistant position at Brown Thomas, Grafton Street, advertised on IrishJobs.ie. I’ve spent the last three years in busy retail roles in Dublin, most recently at Arnotts, where I was top of my department for add-on sales for six months running and trained four new team members on tills and returns. I’m comfortable on my feet all day, good-humoured under pressure, and I take real pride in sending customers away happy. Brown Thomas has a reputation for service that goes a step beyond, and that’s exactly the kind of environment I do my best work in. I’d love the chance to bring my energy to your team for the busy season and beyond. My CV is attached. I’m available for an interview at any time that suits, and I can be reached on 087 123 4567. Yours sincerely, Aoife Kelly
Office / administration
Works for admin, reception and coordinator roles.
Dear Hiring Manager, I’m applying for the Office Administrator role at Murphy & Associates, as advertised on LinkedIn. In my current position at a busy Galway accountancy practice, I manage diaries for three partners, handle all incoming calls and post, and keep our client filing system audit-ready — a system I rebuilt last year, cutting file retrieval time in half. I’m fast and accurate on Microsoft Office, and colleagues would tell you I’m the person they come to when something needs sorting. I’m drawn to this role because it combines client contact with the behind-the-scenes organisation I genuinely enjoy. I’d be glad to bring that same reliability to your team. My CV is attached, and I’m available for interview at your convenience. Yours sincerely, Aoife Kelly
Graduate / first job
Leans on college projects and part-time work when you lack experience.
Dear Mr Byrne, I’m writing to apply for the Graduate Marketing Assistant position at Core, advertised on gradireland.com. I’ve just completed a BA in Marketing at University of Galway (2.1 honours), where my final-year project — a full social media strategy for a local café — grew their Instagram following by 40% in three months. Alongside college, I worked part-time in hospitality, which taught me how to stay organised and personable when five things need doing at once. What draws me to Core is the range of brands you work with; I’d relish the chance to learn fast across different accounts and contribute fresh ideas from day one. My CV is attached. Thank you for your time — I’d be delighted to discuss the role at interview. Yours sincerely, Seán Ó Briain
The structure Irish employers expect
- Opening: the exact role and where you saw it. One sentence.
- Proof: one or two specific, numbered results that match the job ad. This is the paragraph that gets you the interview.
- Why them: one honest sentence on why this company — not flattery, a reason.
- Close: CV attached, when you’re available, phone number. “Yours sincerely” if you named the person, “Yours faithfully” if you didn’t.
